OK, I have to add "Shaker Run" to this thread. Off the beaten path and
predictable plot, but some pretty cool driving scenes in the mountains of
New Zealand (old mid 70's capri towards the end that sounds really cool)
with a hell of a mouth dropping stunt at the end.
Also, speaking of New Zealand, really cool movie called "The World's Fastest
Indian" with Anthony Hopkins that has some good sound too - motorcycles
instead of cars but nonetheless pretty cool - also has some footage of the
real guy the story is based on at the end of the DVD.

While I can't comment on the sound, these are some of the best car films
ever. And I own'em all...
Gone in 60 Seconds - the original and the lame modern one
2 Lane Blacktop
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
Vanishing Point - again the original and modern one
Death Race 2000 - so bad its awesome
Cannonball Run
Cannonball Run II
American Graffiti
Death Proof - gotta like Tarentino to enjoy this one, probably good sound
that's all I can think of now. Sorry for stretching the thread...
