[s-cars] Code 2111 - RPM Sensor

My car stumbled a couple times while driving to work this morning (12°F) and
then again several times on the way home (20°F).  Each time the CEL came on
and the tach needle dropped.  Pulled the codes tonight and got only 2111 –
Engine Speed Sensor (aka RPM Sensor).

 

The G28 Engine Speed Sensor seems secure (although the neighboring G4
Crankshaft Position Sensor was loose.)  Is an intermittent problem with the
RPM Sensor indicative of impending total failure?  Should I mess around with
cleaning the contacts in the gray connector, or just plop down the $117 to
get a replacement sensor on the way ASAP?
