If it is shorter and the first number is the with, it may be a bit narrower  
and ride deeper in the pulleys, thus compensating for the length.
 
My 2 cents.
 
I never have lost a belt on either Audi and only change them when I am in  
doing something where they come off anyway's.  They seem to last a long  time.  
You might want to look at all the alignment stuff to see if you have  a 
problem or just bad luck
