Sean:
one possibility not mentioned is that the inner door panel had been
removed at some point and the bowden cable was NOT properly
reinstalled on the latch. You need to ensure that the lip on the cap
of the cable fits inside the slot on the latch body.
The good news is that you might be able to fix this without removing
the entire door panel ( which btw is held on by a hidden philips
screw NOT shown in Bentley. (thanks Mike Sylvester)
Pop the cover off the door handle with a small flat-bladed
screwdriver, use a philips screw driver to remove the two philips
screws attaching the door handle, remove the handle, which should
then allow you to pull the latch forward and out of the panel. If
necessary, use a wire coat hanger or other piece of stiff wire to
fish for the cable. If the small square shaped latch spring clip is
not on the latch, you'll probably have to remove the door panel and find it.
Had this happen to me after a freezing rain storm, outside handle
froze and would not completely retract, stupid me then flipped the
inner latch after opening the door.
