The lock needs to be profusely sprayed with some lock deicer to return the
lock mechanism into the proper position.  

Do NOT play with the latch / do NOT touch the inside door handle if you
haven't already, or the wire (from handle to latch) could disconnect from
the door latch itself.  (Don't ask)  This would be not good.  While they can
be reconnected with the door panel removed, since you cannot see what you
are doing, it requires a warm garage, good touch, a lot of patients and a
leap of faith to re-attach.   

Once things are working properly, spraying with a lot of WD40 may hold you
until springtime.
