[s-cars] cold starting problem again

Just as an FYI (I'm sure you already know) the switch is made of plastic and is a very weak point on these cars. Plastic has a _huge_ coefficient of expansion/contraction when compared to other materials.
Many years ago I had a 131 Fiat sitting outside on a particularly cold night (~18-20 below IIRC) and at 2:30 AM the horn goes off. The plastic that covered the steering hub had shrunk enough to?force the horn contacts together. Running out at that hour of night in 20 below temps to crawl under the car in the snow and disconnect a horn before the neighbors shoot you is no fun. FWIW that little Weber carbed twin cam motor would always start, unlike?a?#$%&#^ CIS fueled Audi.?

Thanks Dave for your response.
One of the POS units is new. The other one is only 4 years old. I don't think
that it is either of the POS units, since one of them would probably give spark
to the plugs. None of the plugs are getting power, so maybe it is the switch.
What should I read on the input (lower?) side of the POS units? Now that it is
running I can check with a VOM on the three terminals, then put it outside again
and see what happens to that power. Is that bus bar numbered so that I can find
the right power terminal? Do you think that the ignition switch could be
sensitive to low temperature, since the problem always goes away with higher
temperatures?

Jerry: From what you describe, power it NOT getting to either the coils OR
the POSs. Since both
the coils and the POSs are powered off the bus-bar No. 15 terminal (under the
driver's side knee
bolster) which is switched power, you have to suspect: a) the ignition switch
and/or b) the POSs
(the coils are passive and are controlled by the ECU via the POSs)

Info about the POSs and the fact that brown V6 ones can be used in a pinch:

  Hope this helps.
