James:  If I remember correctly, I believe that the 2003 generation of Passat was very much an Audi under the skin (sized somewhere between an A4 and A6) and the Fourmotion system was really the latest  (current at the time) version of quattro (not Haldex).

I think the V6s were Audi V6s (not VR6s) but the V8 was a W8 VW.  I know I saw a Passat wagon with both W8 and Fourmotion.  I was interested but the W8 scared me (maintenance wise).
