James,
There are good ones out there. I just recently bought an '01 from the
original owner with 37k miles on it and over 7k of upgrades for $18k.
I absolutely LOVE the car. Stock turbos and tranny (manual). It was
chipped very soon after it was purchased (owner bought a second ECU and used
the original for warranty service). If you, or anybody else in the Denver
area for that matter, would like to drive the S4 to check out some common
upgrades and what you think of them (stoptechs, chip, exhaust, H&Rs, etc.)
don't hesitate to e-mail me.
Also on the topic of the 2.7T torque converters - my wife drives an '01 A6
2.7T with an auto and it has had no tranny problems...well other than the
fact that the automatic shift programming is a piece of garbage.
So we have had collectively between the two cars about 5 years of 2.7T
ownership with 0 issues with the engine. The only problems we have had with
either car were CV boots on the A6 and Xenon headlight pointing on the A6.
Other than that they have been perfectly behaved. To be fair, though, both
cars have under 60k miels on them.

My wife drives our 95 S6 Avant. I am looking in to getting a B5 S4.
Anything particular to look for?
Thanks,
James Shackelford
