Bob: I stand corrected on the code you got, i.e. engine speed sensor not crank position sensor (both are physically in the same location):

I think at one point, you did swap a known good G4 and G28 pair from another car to the problem car to try out my "theory".  But it wasn't the issue for you.

However, based on Sandy's story, indeed these sensors can and do fail. So the codes do have to be checked and the sensors considered as the problem.
