John,
If any of the coils have been replaced, they were probably just spliced
between the coil pack and the firewall connector.  The POS is usually
replaced with the Bosch generic unit and would not have the Audi p/n
or logo on it and carries a price tag of about 50% of dealer list.   
Not a
foolproof check, but a new coil stands out when the cover is removed
even if the owner is anal enough to install new pins in the connector.

The moisture trap was moved adjacent to the ECU in the passenger
footwell on the S6.

My coils have done fine for 13 years and 145K and I doubt venting
would have prolonged many coils.  You have to make sure moisture
is not introduced in any venting solution since it will fill the plug  
cavity.
