Thanks to everyone who's replied so far.  I have lots of things to check 
now, and I look forward to getting more intimate with my car.  I have 
every receipt and the car has been meticulously maintained, but no coil 
pack or POS replacement has been documented and the odometer just 
reached 150k miles.  It seems reasonable to me that it could lose a coil 
after all these years and miles.  Can the coil pack cover be vented to 
reduce heat in there or does that matter? (does that question insult the 
Audi engineers?)

I just replaced the heater hoses (and moved some of the electrical 
connectors under the rear plenum cover for easier access), so it's 
possible I dislodged the moisture trap on the ECU's boost hose?  Not 
having the Bentley, I didn't know what all that was.  Now, thanks to 
Dave, I've printed a bunch of reference materials.

I'll report my progress and will work on finding a cheap, used microsoft 
machine to run VAG-COM and Bentley.
