Huw,
I'm willing to bet (a half eaten bologna sandwich) that you don't have any modern Audis which run current through the heater elements in the mirrors at all times (key = on). Now way they'll last 300K miles. I've replaced one on my personal S4 at 60K.

Wow, science. Well, an anecdote, at least. All my heated power mirrors
have always been fine - and that right now is two cars totalling almost
600,000 miles - it's the ones hanging from the windshield that lose
their silvering on mine! I need two or three new ones right now...
