It really sounds like your GTI is a lemon. ESP should not activate when
you're backing out of the driveway, that's ridiculous.

I test drove a GTI and did not find ESP activating at all, and I drove it
fairly hard.

In the snow, ESP is really annoying- kills all the fun in the Volvo. At
least you can turn yours off.
