I agree with your point here, Paul.  Remember, you are talking to somebody
who still runs a fricking carburetor on his fun car :)  My only point was to
state that I have never had problems getting up driveways, or being scared
in a snowstorm with the electronic gadgets like some people complain of.  If
you expect a car with ESP and EDL to behave like a 5k its going to be
dangerous.  OTOH, if you expect a 5k to behave like an ESP'd quattro that
will also be dangerous.  It's all about knowing your vehicle and driving
style.  I personally prefer having the electronic gadgets AND the ability to
turn them off.  I would NEVER buy a car with something like ESP that didn't
allow it to be disabled.  Some drivers, call them dumb Americans or whatever
you want, will be safer with the electronics, and other drivers, like the 1%
of the population this board represents, may be safer without it.  With the
option to turn it off you get the best of both worlds.  This argument
reminds me very much of the argument a friend of mine and I used to have
about Audis before I bought my first one.  I used to tell him that they
weren't as much fun as the old school, high-torque American muscle cars I
loved to drive.  Then however, I moved to Denver from FL and discovered snow
+ quattro and high altitude + turbo and was convinced otherwise for this
application.  Still kept one of my muscle cars but conceded that these Audi
things were pretty cool, too ;)

*rant warning*

At least these electronics contribute something to some people's safety on
the road, as opposed to the 5 bazzillion dollar control module on the newer
cars that controls your radio, your HVAC, calls home, wipes your butt, etc.
that will certainly go out every 5 years or so.  Or how about those annoying
LCD flat panels that do nothing but distract the driver and provide mindless
entertainment for junior in the backseat....what was it I used to do when I
was younger and on long car rides....oh yeah, use my imagination and
communicate with others in the car!  What a concept!

I know it was a totally different generation but my 5KCSTQ with manually
locking center and rear diff with ABS on/off ran circles around my UrS6
in

raves about his EDL / ESP positive experiences in his B5 and C5, it
doesn't make me like it or think it's "right".

I have both ESP and EDL on the Alumibitch.  I like them both but hate
them both.  As Calvin states they ARE effective.  I'd like to dump EDL
in mine in favor or a locker, or torsen even.  EDL doesn't always
"allow" me to implement the move I need implemented at the time, that's
all.  Wish there were an off switch honestly.  But it does "work", I
guess.

Having the off switch for ESP is great.  I swat it off to "get underway"
and get done what I need to get done (pronounced:  lurid wheelspin,
ebrake pitching, wheel sawing, etc.).  Once making way I turn it on for
the Hand of God factor, which IS huge.  HOWEVER, it NEEDS to be then
again be swatted OFF when trying to make a road-to-road turn, well,
"properly" at least.  Leaving it on will get it done but I'm not Grampa
Simpson Geriatreldery Buick driver.  Leaving it on and forgetting it's
on - well - that's just downright friggin' ***DANGEROUS***.
