[s-cars] Out for das Fest/What to see in Germany?

Dave- where in Germany? If Munich area there are 2 musts. A beer hall or garden, any will do, the people are very friendly and you can't help but leave having made a bunch of new friends for life (a few liters of beer will do that!!) The Hofbrau is the most famous but attracts more tourists (though one time I was there in an early afternoon we shared a table with some locals who kept buying rounds of schnapps- I don't have much recollection of the rest of the day). And the Deutsches Museum- besides lots of other science and technology exhibits there is a very good section on the history of the German auto industry. Budget a full day if possible.

There are some interesting castles near Munich (Neuschwanstein is the most famous) but the real history is further north in the Rhine valley- it is lined with medieval towns that will take your breath away. And I also have fond memories of cycling through the Mosel river valley- lots of picturesque towns and small wineries (Riesling) and there are ruins dating to the Roman era.

I second the recommendation to try and schedule during Oktoberfest- there is nothing like it anywhere.
