Everything you say is true, but it disregards the basic reason for
upgrading...better handling.

Turn-in response is crisper, handling limits higher, and set up properly it
can reduce float, reduce under/oversteer (who would want to reduce
oversteer???), etc.

Plus some people do think they look much better with less wheel gap and
lower profile tires with larger wheels. You can also get better brake
clearance/cooling.

There are downsides and upsides, and up to the individual to weight the
benefits. But it's not like you're putting square tires on the car by going
to 18"!

I'd be concerned about ET42....ET35 is better, you don't want them to sit
too far inboard.
