Exact same failure with my Crapsman.  The plastic locking ring is no longer in this world and the plastic handle is split.  I have it held together with duct tape at the moment but this thread may inspire me to start searching for a better one before it completely dies.  I've even been too lazy to take it back to the Sears 3 miles from my house for a free replacement.  It is the only Craftsman tool I've ever had a problem with.
