Hey Dave,
Make a trip there normally 1 or 2 times a year, last stay was for a month.
Sadly it was a lot of work... Luckily one of the owners of the company lent
me his RS4 for near the duration. Company picked up the gas bill, thank
god. Normally going there is all about traveling all over the place via
car, some times tight schedules so dont get to stop at many places I would
like to. Course there is nothing wrong with going to North / West / East /
South GmbH all in the same week via car. 245kmph and you can close the
distance well.
Only thing I would note for sure if traveling via car, make sure it has a
NAV system, and preference for Traffic updates as well. There are just
certain places that traffic is crazy stand still type deals, I personally
found driving around the back roads very enjoyable, and a preference to
sitting in traffic. Half the towns/cities besides the large notable ones I
couldnt even pronounce and finding my way around without a NAV was very
annoying, especially at night.
Some thoughts on places to go or things to drive to see while there.
Perhaps they wont fit your schedule but for me they were on the must see
list.
http://www.willkommeninkoeln.de/11sight/sight26e.htm Highly recommended as
an at least stop in and see. I was lucky enough to time a run to the local
train station for a pickup of equipment I needed to viewing this beauty at
Sunrise... Not a religious person per say but it was GODLY of a site.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%C3%BCrburgring Had the fortune of making 2
runs here, laughable as one was in an RS4, the other was in a Ummm.. yeah I
am not going to even say how horrid the second was to take there. Thinking
this is a bit of a haul to get there for you, but everything in GmbH is
within car driving distance.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkpoint_Charlie Not sure this was the most
exciting thing perhaps unless you can get a feel for the roots and history
here. I just wanted to see it and perhaps be there as a "been there done
that." Local tourist trap for sure, but again I needed to see it.
http://www.dresden.de/dwt/en/sights.php, Dresden GmbH, I spent a lot of my
visiting time in this city, Nice place, parent company I work for is close
to here. Visiting the OLD Green room is a must if there, the new Green room
(Treasury Spoils) is not the same. One of the only places I have ever been
where the riches are NOT locked up. They are all in open displays, as such
though getting tickets is hard, and they MOVE you right along when viewing,
its a timed event Run Run... cause they need to limit the number of folks
in the room and such. Either case nice smallerish place in general. The
local Church has a lot of interesting history as well. If your near Dresden
you can also check out Basti, cool mountain range and on a clear day you can
see quite far. Pics of Basti and such can be seen on my myspace page,
myspace.com/titaniumnation and perhaps dont do it justice at all.
Either way enjoy your trip, stay away from larger hotels or such (IMO) the
smaller local places always seem to have a great atmosphere resembling a bit
more like a larger bed and breakfast deal, with normally a great
restaurant/pub built in. Folks are generally nice, and from my self
lUrnings while there Ausfahrt is not a city.... *blink*
Yadda Yadda Beer is good.
Enjoy your trip Dave.
