good one Chris! What's the saying, that which doesn't kill you makes you stronger? My now wife was my girlfriend at the time of that trip as well- it actually helped cement our relationship- I've always felt that being able to travel together is an absolute requirement for long-term compatibility. Camping together is even better- we did in fact camp quite a bit on that trip, staying in B&B's when the weather was less pleasant.
We also settled on the "just pick a road" solution to the traffic circle dilemma. I'd pick an interesting road, she would eventually figure out on the map where we were going, and it was off on a new adventure. It led to discovering lots of cool places including a wonderful campground in the shadow of a Loire Valley castle where we stayed 4 days while visiting the Le Mans racing museum and area castles.
