You don't think I can't just replace the stretched pinch bolts with new?
I would not think that the strut housing is damaged (Nothing has come apart yet.)
That will be confirmed after an inspection like you said testing for movement with a big prybar.

This is your problem... most likely anyways.
I have had the same issues. The solution may be a new strut housing.
you can try to separate the joint with a big bar and see move much movement 
there is.
