[s-cars] Slow Tire Leak

Hi,

I'm coming into this thread a bit late but here is my experience and I'm
located near Chicago. Most of the slow air leaks I have had have been due
primarily to corrosion at the rim. Yes, grinding it off and applying a sealant is
the usual cure. I think the problem is due to salt eating away the rim.
Lastly, I did have a hard-to-find problem in my long gone 1983 5000T. The
problem turned out to be porosity in a rim. Putting the wheel in water you could
see a slow stream of bubbles coming out of the center of the rim. The rim
was a Ronal. The cure was replacing the rim under warranty. The '83 5000T was
the last Audi I bought new. They are a great buy used, aren't they?

I had a set of '89 200 Pearl White rims that none of the tire garages could
get to stop leaking a slow leak. I think a lot of it was due to the paint
finish coming off...I'm not sure....but I finally had to buy a replacement
set of rims to stop the weekly tire filling crap.

Valve stem leakage is probably most common - aside from punctures, of
course. I have also seen slow leakage resulting from a small crack
in the wheel after pothole participation.
