I suppose when you start slamming 4 valve seats per cylinder head instead of
2, like I am used to, and put the spark plug right in the middle of all
that, these things do tend to happen more frequently, and people have
probably "proven them good" at some point. Also, I would guess that since
the valves are smaller, lighter, and have a lot less spring pressure behind
them than the valves I am used to dealing with it probably is a less risky
proposition.

Calvin's point is a good one. However, a crack from the plug bore to the
valve seat is a very common and acceptable failure in the eyes of most
rebuilders... very common in VW, Audi and BMW.
I wouldn't see it as a major risk.

Ummmm....having not rebuilt an Audi engine my opinion may be incorrect, but
for all the engines Irebuild you definitely don't use a cracked cyclinder
head. These engines, although rare, are now "popping up" pretty regularly
and I certainly wouldn't sacrifice an engine rebuild for lack of an
un-cracked head.

The machine shop just called regarding my head, they say there is a crack
from the spark plug down to the valve seat in cylinder 5. They also said
that it
was no big deal.
What is your opinion?
I know that cylinder heads develop cracks etc. should I be worried?
