Thanks John - that's good stuff.  I inspected the wires briefly where  
they route underneath, but didn't find anything alarming.  But i may  
need to fillet open the wrap with a blade and inspect more closely.   
(see next post).

Oh and i sure hope the new firmware fixes that... there's a couple  
work-around apps at the App store, but none are smooth enough for me  
to use all the time.

My current fave for email (and FREE for the moment!) is Easywriter.   
Works beautifully.
