The other big suspect to me here is the wiring itself which is another
notorious problem with this part of the car. If it's crumbling at the POS
connector it must be hard and cracking around where it exits the coil cover
I imagine? You could easily have intermittent arcing and shorting there not
to mention just increased resistance as the copper tends to corrode heavily
where the cracks are.
I just painstakingly replaced all my coil wiring with new high temp telflon
insulated wire a few weeks ago (pics posted on AW if you're interested
http://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/243208.phtml). It's a slog of a job
though - plan a full morning with the soldering iron and wire strippers.
The wires are integal to the coils so to all our chagrin there's no stock
harness you can buy, you have to cut the OEM back to little pigtails and
splice onto that.
If all that work sounds too daunting and non-value-added you might jump
straight to a new set of LS2 or 1.8T coils but of course attendant expense
there...
(And hey new iPhone firmware is supposed to drop in the next few days lets
hope for cut & paste!)
