I too had an A2 GTi, which ate it's tranny. Turns out that was a design flaw
that VW sort of half covered (gave me $500 towards an $1100 rebuild) at 50K
miles. Other than that, the car was (reasonably, yeah, there were broken
plastic bits) durable right up until a storm felled tree landed on it 14 yrs
and 110K heavily autocrossed miles later. If Paulie does post contact info,
I'm actually half serious. $800 for that sort of raw fun (not too mention 87
octane mid-high 20 MPG flailing it as hard as you can) works for me.
