[s-cars] NAC: He Said "Scirocco!"

 Larry,

The design flaw was that VW replaced a cir-clip in the transmission with a pop-rivit.? Either of them was to hold in a set of
gears on a shaft.? What happens is that the pop rivit wears down and the gears slide off the shaft and through the tranny case.
In my case, I complained to the zone rep (44K miles) and VW paid for 1/2 of the cost.? My job was originally quoted at $3K.?
When VW entered the picture the prices fell to VW rates, namely $2200.? My cost was 1/2 or $1100. I guess the prices are higher in
Chicago but this was 1986!? With this level of design expertice at VW I decided to no longer buy their products.? BTW, this type
of problem was documented in European Car Magazine in the 1980's.

I too had an A2 GTi, which ate it's tranny. Turns out that was a design
flaw that VW sort of half covered (gave me $500 towards an $1100
rebuild) at 50K miles. Other than that, the car was (reasonably, yeah,
there were broken plastic bits) durable right up until a storm felled
tree landed on it 14 yrs and 110K heavily autocrossed miles later. If
Paulie does post contact info, I'm actually half serious. $800 for that
sort of raw fun (not too mention 87 octane mid-high 20 MPG flailing it
as hard as you can) works for me.

 To you buyers,

This thread does not seem to die so I'll add my 2 cents.

I, too, had a 1981 Scirocco S, white with red interior.
It was a bucket of rust. I bought it new and sold it in
1986 to get a new GTI.??The GTI ate its tranny and that

was the last time I ever looked at owning a VW. Both cars
were a lot of fun but hardly durable.

 I had a 81 Red S, too.
Loved it until I totaled it on a long left hand sweeper and
sneezed...drifted into the gravel on the right hand side, over corrected and
it spun backwards into a ditch on the opposite side

There seems to still be some running in some of the SCCA classes?
