Yup, knew that. When they rebuilt it, they used the older (pre-JT) pinion
shaft and circlip. Guess the labor rates around upstate NY in 87 were
significantly less than Chicago. I'm sure things would've been different had
I been in the Greater NYC region. And, the stupid flaw was confined to only
the close ratio 8V gearboxes. One of my friends (and former member of our
SCCA region) had his gearbox self machine on the way to Nationals in his
Jetta Wolfsburg. He rebuilt the tranny in the hotel parking lot (I'm sure
the management must've loved the mess of gear oil) and went on to trophy at
Nats. Yes, dumb design to save a few cents. Wasn't one of VAG's more
brilliant decisions. I just don't think other mfgs are immune from just as
stupid decisions, only we're more aware of VAG's mistakes as a part of this
forum.
