[s-cars] Apikol Report

I run the Apikol 1.8 kit and FWIW it does solve the dilemma of
soldering in new expensive coils to repair the OEM system. I too
thought I have noticed a very very slight decrease in both throttle
response and overall smoothness compared to the OEM system but it is
barely perceptible and may be a figment of my imagination.
The 1.8 coils suck, I have replaced all 5 of the original 1.8 coils
already, in a time span of 2 months to 1.5 years after installing the
kit. The early coils used "L" I think lasted about as long as a
virgin on prom night but the latest coils "R?" are a bit better but
not completely dependable. I have one now that is dropping on boost
20psi or higher. You must carry a spare coil in the trunk and then
play a guessing game when replacing them if your only getting cut out
at boost. Eventually it will miss all the way down to idle but I try
and replace before then.
So, it is an option and a decent one at that but not a completely
reliable solution. The kit itself is very well made and Apikol is a
top notch company with great people running it. I would never
hesitate to recommend anyone to do business with them.
However, I have been thinking for some time that I want to diagnose
and replace the one failed OEM coil and get that system back on the
car while keeping the Apikol kit for emergency duty. It takes all of
5 minutes to replace the original set up with the Apikol kit.
