Ron:  The last time I changed a C4 Audi battery, the one that I was first given was
too tall at about 10.75" and would have ended up with the seat wire frame potentially
contacting the + post of the battery.  I rejected that battery and found a shorter one,
9.75" IIRC with the proper vent tube, etc. that worked and cleared the seat frame.

I suspect your battery is too tall. 

BTW, I also duct tape the + post cover onto the battery just to be sure.
