[s-cars] Help with Brake Problem

Coming back from dinner tonight, son was driving and stopped at a
light.  In an attempt to adjust his jeans, he pushes himself up using
the brake pedal for leverage.  There was a sound and then he said,
"That's weird."

The pedal had pushed to the floor.  We continued for another mile and
he was getting little response from the pedal.  After we dropped a
guest off, I took over the wheel.  The pedal was very soft, a little
brake activity at the start of the push, then nothing until it got to
the bottom of the stroke, then some more brake activity.

The brake light was on the entire way home.  The further we went the
less brake activity until the pedal was all the way to the bottom.
Got home safe due to a lot of downshifting and stop light avoidance.

Theories on what may have given out?

Patient is a 95.5 S6 Avant.
