Hmm... that's weird - the number on that part doesn't show up in ETKA under
any of the usual models, including the '95 A6. Often those are branded
Hitachi (as well as Beru) and the one that is more often used as a sub in
UrS cars are the "905 351" (vs. the "351A" which is the AAN part number). I
searched for your part number across VW and Audi models and couldn't find
anything but maybe I didn't search long enough.
The standard answer seems to be "the brown ones will work in a pinch or as a
spare". However I have yet to get solid confirmation from anybody that they
really are somehow inferior in quality or performance. Fundamentally a POS
is just a "triple darlington" stack of power transistors, so there isn't
anything super magic about them that any semi-conductor mfr couldn't
replicate, unless the electrical spec for the V6 was appreciably lower.
My car has had a brownie (Beru I think?) for AFAIK at least 50-60k and is
still going strong, and others have reported similar experience, even with
used ones yanked from junked Dubs. Now I'm not running mega-boost, so if
there was an issue where the brownie passed slightly less current that only
manifested as an issue at high pressure levels then I might not know - I'm
not saying the OEM 351A isn't better, but I have yet to pin down firm
evidence of the difference and certainly no wide reports of them randomly
dying (like there is with 1.8T coils...)
Regarding the ebay one you found - IIRC people were finding new "351"
brownie POS's for around $100 lately so personally I'm not sure I'd pay more
than $20 for a used one. If you keep searching ebay you'll find lots more
stuff to wade through - try "ignition control module", and try this PN
search, checking off 'Include Title and Description' and INCLUDE parentheses
and quotes exactly: ("905 351", 905351, "905 351A", "905 351 A", 905351A)
