It's normal to have a certain number of inactive coils on the rear
springs. It allows for full suspension travel without having the spring
come off the spring perches, and subsequently not sitting back on the
perches properly when the suspension is recompressed.
As for your front ding, it isn't because of the HR springs. It sounds
like whoever installed them didn't put the support washer back on and
the shock piston blew through the strut mount.
