Just because he was crushed doesn't mean it was because of his own
stupidity- maybe the car was jacked up by someone else who was keeping
a lookout, and they didn't like him much and dropped the car on him,
or accidentally dropped the jack (or the jack failed) and then freaked
instead of calling for help. So, they may be classifying it as an
undetermined/suspicious death, or it may be because he was engaged in
a criminal act when he died.
Police usually don't have problems with thoroughness of investigation.
I'm not going to complain, even if the guy was metal scavenging.
Also, newspapers don't always get or print the whole story- maybe they
found a stab wound in the dude, but they didn't tell the paper that
until they've interviewed some people.
