I think Andrew is looking for the maximum difference in tread depths (as in to not stress quattro with rotational differences) rather than what the minimum recommended tread depth. 

I don't recall (without looking at the manual) how much difference is allowable, but for snowies, if I don't start the season with at least 6/32, I'm probably going snow tire shopping, as it gets really snowy around here.

I'm down to about 6/32 on my 330i and will go for another yr.  But I live in the NYC metro and dont really drive it if its really going to snow (like 1" ground clearance) and dont put too many miles on it (it just goes to the train station).
