BTDT, so I'll chime in on this thread. Had this decision 2 or 3 years ago. What I went with was a 2001 Audi A4 with 2.8 and auto tranny. It has the benefits of 4WD and 6 airbags as well as nice relatively slow acceleration (as compared to my 95.5 S6 RS2). So far no real accidents, just self-inflicted parking damage. In a downpour the kid hit a large rock on the side of the road, cornholed the oil pan and kept driving for 10 more miles. I changed the pan, added more Mobil 1, listened to the lifters tick for 10 minutes until they quieted down. That was 16,000 miles ago.

I'll second that one- the FWD 850 non-turbo or the S70 is a pretty solid car
that is too slow to get yourself in trouble but very safe.

I would actually advocate getting a teen a manual transmission car- it's
much harder to talk on your cellphone or do other stupid things if you have
to worry about shifting gears as well.
