Think about this:
Timing gear/belt pulley (misrepresented repeatedly as 'crankshaft pulley',
which I believe actually references the accessory belt pulley and harmonic
balancer assembly) is ALUMINUM. Not exactly a strong material but stong
enough to push a fiber+rubber belt.
Therefore the key (aluminum) would NOT be intended to hold the rotational
movement (otherwise it would be heat treated steel as found in your Chevy)
300 ft lbs of torque will yield tons of compression after the lever ratio of
the threads has been multiplied. Example: put one finger in a vice, turn the
screw with the other finger. Now do you understand the multiplier??
That timing belt pulley is held in place by the crankshaft bolt and the
crankshaft pulley.
