I think it only takes the starter with it if you fail to recognize the
symptoms. IIRC, when the key doesn't spring back, the starter keeps
spinning, killing it. If you manually give the key a bit of a counter-
clockwise rotation, helping it back to the run position, the starter
stops spinning and you should be OK.
The key (pun) is recognizing when the key doesn't spring back.
