Could be the Boden cable has become disconnected - means disassembling the
door trim and then a bit fiddly to re-connect but can be fixed. There's a
write up on S-Cars.org about how to remove the trim

My wife mentioned that her '96 A6 won't let her out. Driver's side  
door, opens normally from the outside, handle is ineffective from the  
inside.

I don't know if it's related, but the door has been difficult to lock  
with the key.

Can someone send a pointer to a good writeup on the fix? Is this a  
simple shadetree fix or more involved?
