[s-cars] Team door handle

The warning signs are imminent - similar to what happened to me on my '91 200 QT...

Keep the door open until fixed or remove inside panel ASAP, which you will likely need
to do anyway. The outside latch may be soon to follow and then you are really stuck in
a catch-22 - BTDT when I shut the door to test why the inside handle didn't work (twice
silly me) and the second time the outside failed too. Much cursing ensued. I was
unable to get the door panel off from the inside as you can't remove it with the door
closed. You need to have the panel off to fix it. Hopefully you won't have to go
through the trials I did to fix what would have been relatively simple had I removed the
door panel at first sign of a problem.

I'll not go into what you do when you get the panel off since usually you look in, see
problem, fix problem. Might need parts, but you won't know 'til you check.

My wife mentioned that her '96 A6 won't let her out. Driver's side door, opens normally
from the outside, handle is ineffective from the inside.

I don't know if it's related, but the door has been difficult to lock with the key.

Can someone send a pointer to a good writeup on the fix? Is this a simple shadetree fix
or more involved?

Much appreciated!
