There's a fuel pump relay under knee bolster that has always been pointed to
a culprit for this type of activity.
Tony
96 S6 - fuel pump and relay on list of things to replace this spring, along
with turning signal switch!

Gentz,
Patient is a 93 UrS4, was running fine with less than a 1/4 tank of fuel.
Come back out ot the car after being parked ~5 minutes and it wants to start
but won't start.
CPS was replaced ~30,000 miles ago, I don't suspect it is bad.
Poured in ~ 4 gallons of gas in case the gauge is off, same symptoms.
Gave it a squirt of starting fluid and it starts, runs and will rev until it
runs out of starting fluid. Give it another squirt and get the same results.
Suspect I have a failed fuel pump, luckily it died in my driveway and I have
a spare.
Question 1. Is anything I should suspect other than the fuel pump?
Question 2. I've found the fuel pump replacemetn FAQ on audiworld
http://www.elektro.com/~audi/fuelpump/ however I don't understand exactly
how the pump comes out of the basket, reading this CnP
"Reach in, to the fuel tank and either use the VAG tool to loosen (anticlock
wise) the fuel pump retaining basket OR unclip the fuel pump from the
basket. Remember how everything is oriented. See photo. There are two clips
one at 6 oclock and one at 12 oclock. You can only get one arm in the hole
so do one clip at a time, eg. back and then front, lifting/twisting the fuel
pump a bit, and then the other clip."
Am I simply supposed to wiggle/pull on the 2 tabs that appear to be C shaped
(see pic) http://www.elektro.com/~audi/fuelpump/fuelpumpcarrier.jpg
Thanks
Chris
