[s-cars] Oil Temperature Question-How Hot is too hot

Gents,

Thanks for all the replies, see below:

1. Scott, I have not seen 170C on the gauge yet, but I have seen 150C
(and/or a needles width beyond) while pushing hard during a 20-25
minute track session on the "warmer" days of early spring and late
fall. Leakdown test would be interesting data to know. What are the
within spec numbers for a leakdown test?

2. Pizzo, thanks for the lead on the Setrab, to quote a website:
"Setrab, made in Sweden, is the number one supplier of oil coolers
and heat exchangers to the professional racing industry and are OEM
suppliers to manufacturers such as Rolls Royce and Ferrari". The 625
is a 25 row unit, same as Scott mentioned. Going rate seems to
approximately 225USD.

3. Vincent, no more room at the front, at least not in front of the
FMIC. I like the ducting idea but will need to figure a way to fish
it around, as there is quite a bit of "stuff" in the way. One
downside is that the FMIC kit I'm using (Tom and Marc Kit) has piping
that pretty much blocks off the passenger side auxiliary grill on the
right side, so the duct would likely need to come from the left/
drivers side all the way over to the right.

4. Steve, It's been a while since I had the undertray, but from what
my aging brain remembers are that there was a FMIC pipe that
protrudes downward and at least visually looked like it would
interfere with the undertray, and I can't be certain again, but I
think the mounting points for the leading edge of the under tray are
removed when you hack away the lower bumper cover to fit the LLtek(my
wifes car, S8, has leading edge fasteners, but I could be confusing
her car with mine). Of those cars that you have seen with the
undertray and LLtek together, did they use all the fastening points?

5. Taka, Don't have an undertray anymore, so I can't try to refit. I
read some Corvette forum posts and some guys who track their cars
have seen similar temps during a roughly 30 min track session
(285-300F or 140-150C). There was some chatter that an external
aftermarket cooler would lower temps by 20 (I presume F instead of C,
20F is about 7C). Some posts mentioned that the combo radiator/cooler
option you mentioned was a good compromise if you drove the car on
the street (of course there were a few posts that said the combo unit
didn't work well for them), but that they would only use a separate
larger unit if it was a track only car. Would you know why that might
be?

6. Brett, I dunno know flash points from flash bulbs, but I use
synthetic mobil 1, 20/50 or 15/50, at the track, and I change it
before every event.

7. Tom, sometimes I dunno what's up with my car, but I still like
driving the ol' pig around. Wife says it's the meathead steering, not
the car. What fun would it be if I had to keep my foot out of the
throttle :-).

Thanks to all.
