Lee, it really depends on how corrupt your particular court system is.
In Philly, my attorney just talks to the judge and stuff gets
dismissed all the time. I don't bother trying that defense. I also
don't try to talk to the police because you really have the luck of
the draw- sometimes they offer a no points violation even w/o a
lawyer, other times they don't. With my attorney, it's always a sure
thing.
However, out in the suburbs, it's not the same- w/o a lawyer, you're
going to be hung out to dry no matter what your argument may be.
I've never gotten a break from a state trooper- last time I got pulled
over, was in NY, state trooper wrote me for 100 even though he told me
he clocked me at 93. His reasoning was that he had to drive at 109mph
in order to catch up to me. WTF? Lawyer got that down to a 75 in a 65
and avoided the surcharge that hits NY violations when you exceed 6
points out of a possible 12. Plus, NY doesn't require you to stand
trial- your lawyer can represent you in absentia, which is sweet. The
bill wasn't sweet, but saves a trip to upstate NY.
