[s-cars] Rear CV joint gone 1000 mi to go.

driving 1000 miles on it with a torn boot will probably cause the CV joint to deteriorate. however, if the CV joint is clunking, it's already trashed and will need to be replaced anyway.

it's unlikely that the CV joint will fail completely or lock up solid in the next 1000 miles, so i'd just keep driving and replace it at home.

You definitely want to keep it greased, problem is if the boot
is too torn the centrifgiual force will throw it out and let dirt in.

I swear there used to be "universal CV boot kit"s that wrap around the
axle and seals shut with screws. Otherwise I would try greasing it
and then clean the boot as throughly as possible and then wrap duct tape
around it a few million times to try and seal it up. Obviousl you are
going to want to keep an eye on this as you continue your voyage.

Where are you, I have a friend in Buffalo who might be able to provide a
place to work on it. Where are you headed to, perhaps someone ahead of you
can be of assistance.
