[s-cars] Rear CV joint gone 1000 mi to go.

Here's a trick that saved me a CV replacement over a 500 miles drive, but
it's quick and easy so you can repeat as needed:

First, I wouldn't be as concerned with the grease getting out than the dirt
getting in, and with a CV boot open, it's already in, so:

1- Tear apart as much as you can of the boot with some knife to expose the
CV and shoot the CV with a full can of brake cleaner to remove as much
contaminated grease as possible.
2- Re-grease with CV grease. Just take some from the first autopart shop you
find since it's only for 1000 miles so you don't care if it's a good quality
one or not.
3- Wrap 3 grocery bags, aka 6 layers (that's all I had handy but trash bags
are more resistant) around the CV, making sure it's loose enough that it
won't stretch, only flex (that means as loose as possible not to be torn by
anything around).
4- Wrap it with electrical tape or duct tape at each end, 4-5 turns, tape
not touching anything but the bag so it can slide if needed.
5- Check it frequently at the beginning to make sure the bags are loose
enough.
6- When you're in a place you can do it properly, remove the CV, clean it
thoroughly then use the proper grease and boot.

In my case, I checked it about 20 miles further, re-wrapped it because it
was apparently to tight, then at 50 miles and it was OK, then drove the 500
miles and it hold.

The idea is to replace the bags (quick and easy) before you go through the
six layers so you don't need to clean the CV again (long and messy).

It's not that I have a lot of experience in emergency CV boot repair but my
experience in mechanic told me grit was more of a concern than grease and it
worked at the end.

We are on a road trip, and just noticed a clunk aproaching
Minneapolis. Found right rear outer cv joint wide open and spewing
grease. Problem is that Carousel Audi says 3 days for parts and we
have 1000 mi to go. Can we give it grease injections every so often
and just carry on? There is a slight noise but only noticable at slow
speeds or turning left. Antilock off light just came on.

What wisdom doth the mighty list gods suggest?
