I dunno about the '92 vintage, but with my '89 200 I did the cheapo
'non-OEM-approved conversion'.  Worked for almost 2 full seasons. Then
started requiring increasingly frequent top-offs. Then pretty much stopped
working regardless. That seems to be the consensus from all other reports
I've seen/heard - i.e. the 'just try R134 and new lube' trick works for a
while but then craps out.

I take that as evidence that contrary to some internet claims, they aren't
bullshitting when they say the old hoses & seals will get destroyed
eventually by the R134 & it's oil. As you say usually the quote for a "real
conversion" is very pricey as they'll claim to replace all kinds of
hoses/seals/orifices and often a big part like the accumulator, and often
the compressor as well based on the fact that the internal seals in the
compressor can't all be upgraded.
