I recently removed the headliner on my 91 200q20v.
Spot repair won't work, it's the foam backing that's disintegrating and unless you scrape that off down to headliner, gluing it back up will be futile, BTDT.
It is possible to get it out without taking the windshield out and with little damage [actually one 2" tear]. It's a pain in the ass job all around. The glue they use to hold the headliner to the roof is amazing!! A couple square feet of it behind the sunroof, but it is tough to break free. I tried solvents, which worked but was messy, I tried just using a flat scraper and that with some solvent finally worked it free. The visors have to come off and ideally the A, B and C pillars. I did take the visors off, but, not the pillars and it was tough to get it free of them, but, possible. Once the suckers off getting it out of the car was a matter of working it this way and that until I found a way [I ended up taking it out a back door with one front head restraint removed]. I'd also removed the fabric in the car so I had this sticky orange foam all over everything, so leave the fabric on until later.
It's a 10 on the crap job scale!! I bet I've spent at least 10 hrs on it so far, getting it out, getting the foam off, just a crappy job!!!!
I'm going to leave it out for the winter and put it back in next spring [after I decide what to do with it, paint, fabric, etc.]. When I do put it in I am going to cut it side to side and put it in in halves with some discrete side to side support for the halves.
Good luck! Bob

Subject: [s-cars] Headliner repair
Hi Kids:
My headline in my 94 S4 has started to sag in a few discrete locations (in the
very back and above the sunvisors).
Has anyone had any luck with spot repairs? Repair in place?
The shop wants $150 for the headline repair itself, But I have to coordinate a
front windshield removal and reinstallation so they can take the headliner out
the window opening. Not real excited about this prospect.
Any experiences?
Thanks,
Kevin
