[s-cars] Steering lock replacement?

IIRC there are usually two things involved or applicable here.
One, as you mentioned was drilling the housing (see Bentley for more precise
targeting measurement for drilling), after which you can depress a pin and
extract the key/tumbler/lock cylinder mechanism.
Option two is to remove the whole steering lock/ignition switch assembly
from the steering column. IME, those are usually held in with either a
security torx (maybe a T30) or a shear bolt. And in the ur-S cars, I have
half a memory of that fastener being partially obscured/shrouded by the dash
board contours. Again, I don't recall completely, but have the cloudy
memory that even after that fastener has been removed, you needed the
key/ignition mechanism function so you could retract the steering lock
before there was sufficient clearance to get the whole steering lock housing
out of the column etc, assuming the dash is still installed.
Hope this helps some. If you get stuck, drop me an email and I can fax you
some Bentley pages. The book according to Robert isn't always completely
helpful, but I believe it does well on this specific issue.

Subject: [s-cars] Steering lock replacement?
This is regarding a 1993 S4.
First, many thanks to the list for all the references
to the "how-to's" on the ignition switch replacement.
30 minutes later, I had the switch out, and it wasn't
the problem. I could start the car with screw driver
(in the switch) with the normal force.
The key does unlock the steering wheel.
However, reaching around to the back of the
assembly, I couldn't feel the center tang rotate at all,
while manipulating the key. Thus I'm guessing the
mechanical part of the steering lock has failed. At
$230-250 special order, I'd like to remove it first to
be sure. I've heard that you can drill out a pin and
use your existing lock cylinder.
However searching my (mostly contiguous) 56K
messages back to Jan 2003, I couldn't find any
techniques on replacing the steering lock.
The assembly is fairly accessible, but without obvious
fasteners, clips, etc (and being a security device) I guessing
the is either a subtle technique, or major disassembly of the
steering mechanism. Has anyone BTDT, or can quickly
describe the technique?
Many Thanks,
- Phil
