Patrick if it makes you feel any better before I knew the trick I also did
it the PITA way... back in 1987 or so I bought a '74 2002 heavily tinted and
did the same thing (painstaking and irritating scraping and peeling). it was
a nasty experience.
I also used a heavy application of acetone once the scraping was done...
which probably me lost a few IQ points after hours of inhaling fumes
struggling in the backseat to get the last of it off...

Subject: [s-cars] Tint Removal
Oh man, where were you guys twelve years ago when I bought a, new to me,
1985 190E 2.3-16V from Reno, NV ? It had some pretty dark tint but nothing I
thought exceeded the
other cars I'm seeing on the road all around me. Wisconsin's version of
Roscoe P. Coltrane
thought different. Two weeks after licensing it in Milwaukee an energetic
and stoic cop
does a 180 and pulls me over, gives me an $80 fix-it ticket with one week
to:
a) put a front plate on it(ruins a beautiful front view of the 2.3-16V) and
b) remove all the tint - my jaw dropped open, local firms wanted upwards
of $300 to remove said tint, no I'll take care of it myself, nope, not once
did
a heat gun cross my mind, I spent over 12 hours on a weekend scraping it
off with a razor blade - never crossed my mind that maybe the sweltering
115deg
heat in summer was actually helping me a little - no no, I continued on and
got to
the back window where I proceeded to scrape most of the copper landing off
of
my rear defroster as well.....heat gun, wish I had that eureka moment, or
you guys
back then....still have the Mercedes, and now an S6, and all of you, things
are looking up!

I wonder if Eric Holder is going to make me license my heat gun?
