Subject: [s-cars] Tint Removal

Oh man, where were you guys twelve years ago when I bought a, new to me, 1985 190E 2.3-16V from Reno, NV ? It had some pretty dark tint but nothing I thought exceeded the
other cars I'm seeing on the road all around me. Wisconsin's version of Roscoe P. Coltrane
?thought different. Two weeks after licensing it in Milwaukee an energetic and?stoic cop
?does a 180 and pulls me over, gives me an $80 fix-it ticket with one week to:
a) put a front plate on it(ruins a beautiful front view of the 2.3-16V) and
b) remove all the tint - my jaw dropped open, local firms wanted upwards
of $300 to remove said tint, no I'll take care of it myself, nope, not once did
a heat gun cross my mind, I spent over 12 hours on a weekend scraping it
off with a razor blade - never crossed my mind that maybe the sweltering 115deg
heat in summer was actually helping me a little - no no, I continued on and got to
the back window where I proceeded to scrape most of the copper landing off of
my rear defroster as well.....heat gun, wish I had that eureka moment, or you guys
back then....still have the Mercedes, and now an S6, and all of you, things are looking up!

I wonder if Eric Holder is going to make me license my heat gun?>>>

D'oh Patrick. Agreed - the fumes can be the worst part. Eeeek. Brain cells? What are those?

Bummer to hear on Roscoe P.C. - front plates ruin basically any car really. I never run 'em, tho did have an on-ramp check point convo about mine 2 daze ago right in town - I merely gave him the blank "dunno" response that I'd lost it years ago and he waived me thru - likely more looking for seat belter's that day, my guess.

Last year I had the same 180'er situation in the //S8. Told me to remove / take pic / mail in and would be dropped. So I did. Photoshop voila / muwHA! JNR.

Cool on your Euro - and having both that & urS6 simultaneously. I did too until I sold my '87 in favor of H&Rs & Big Reds way back in the day 8-). Miss that car. Course then sold the urS6 to fund der Alumibitch - miss that car too, least I see it @ //SFest annually heh heh.

Keep your 2.3-16 if you can, a hoot and a hollar they are certainly and vastly under appreciated. Tough finding a good/clean one these daze.

Enjoy!

-Paul
