[s-cars] Driveline noise/vibration

Jim,
The driveshaft center support advice sounds pretty solid, but don't forget the front and/or rear driveshft CVs. The only center bearing issue I've ever had was on a 99.5 A4 Avant, and it only happened leaving a stop, more prevalently when making a right turn (due to the tighter nature?), and even more noticably if leaving the stop with "authority" so to speak. 106K is low mileage to have one fail, based on my coupe and S4 having double that, but the A4 was @ about 100K when I replaced it.

You also might want to check brake calipers that may be stuck/frozen, and for something wedged between the brake dust shields and the rotor.

Gentz,

I had a poor experience with this part, if you buy it know that it is NOT
designed as a simple replacement part.
It is made to fit a range of models and apparently requires the installer to
modify and tweak in order to work correctly.

034's stance is that it simply needs shims; which 034 does not supply or make
mention of on their website at all.

Suffice to say it was different enough that after my tech had completed the work
to install it on the driveshaft it
didn't come close to lining up correctlty when he attempted to install it in the
car; he ended up installing one of my
"spare" driveshafts.

I have one installed on a driveshaft in da trunk of my car if you are close
enough to Kalamazoo and wish to give it a try.

Chris

PS could the noise be an exhaust piece has moved and rubbing on the driveshaft?

I'm only going from memory, but I think you're right, and there is a BMW part
available... or get this:

Thanks for the quick replay Dave.....

Is this the part that is shared with a BMW or something?  Or am I getting this
mixed up with the urquattro?

I assume I shouldn't drive the car all that much with it like this?

Any R&R writeup or advice if that is indeed the case?  Any recommendation on
part suppliers and part #?

I'll check it out in the am......

Thanks again......

Jim

Hey guys,

Something I noticed a few days ago, very sporadic and unintrusive, has today
become noisy and with considerable vibration under initial load upon
acceleration.  In first and second gear especially, under acceleration, I am
hearing a "ting ting ting" bell sound from under the car, speed related, not RPM

related.  Also feeling noticable vibration until about 20 mph, then I still hear

the sound faintly, and the vibration is gone.  Car drives fine at highway
speeds.  Could this be the driveshaft or driveshaft bearing?  Took a look
underneath with a flashlight tonight but couldn't see anything obvious, other
than a bit of wetness around the rear differential, but not anything really
bad......what should I look for when I get under there tomorrow in the daylight?

Car has 106K miles, spent mostly in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.......

Thanks so much......don't really need this just before the busy time of year,
that's for sure!

Best regards,

Jim Fleischer
